BSUG Workshop at the RCOG Careers Fair

11th January 2012

The British Society of Urogynaecology was invited, along with the other Specialist Societies, to run a workshop at the RCOG Careers Fair on the 19th of November 2011.

The Careers Fair was very successful and was attended this year by 276 medical students and foundation doctors. The BSUG workshop was organised by Ruben Trochez, Sheela Swamy and Maya Basu. We had a number of models and sample devices, loaned from Ethicon and Boston Scientific, to give participants a “hands on” experience in understanding the concept of mid-urethral retropubic and trans-obturator tape placements for treatment of incontinence, as well as mesh support for correction of prolapse. Audio-visual display of DVD’s demonstrating cadaveric anatomy and the important landmarks of pelvic floor dissection, surgical prolapse and incontinence procedures, posters depicting anatomy and physiology of pelvic floor and bladder and original research posters from international conferences, kept the room busy with plenty of things to see and do for everyone attending. The additional promise of chocolates made our workshop rather busy even after closing time.

It was a great to see and talk to so many young students and junior doctors who appeared highly motivated to take up a career in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, with some of them already showing special interest in Urogynaecology.

The workshop was very well received and had a positive feedback. We hope that BSUG can continue contributing to this event in future years and hope to inspire the juniors to take up Obstetrics and Gynaecology
